The area of heather hills, bog, and heathland above the Glenasmole Valley on the Old Military Road are known locally as the Featherbeds. This part of the Dublin Mountains was an important source of household turf in the last century, particularly during the second world war when coal supplies to the capital city were interrupted. The landscape is wild and open with old heather bushes and peat banks on thegentle lower slopes of the hills that rise in the background. Spectacular views of the Dublin Mountains as they merge in to the higher Wicklow Mountains are possible all along the Military Road leading south and south east into County Wicklow. Roadside viewing points above Glenasmole also provide panoramic views of Dublin City and Dublin Bay spread out in the lowlands to the north east. Night time views of the city are spectacular.
