It may well be a long way to Tipperary; but as Ireland's largest inland county it's well worth the visit. Practically encircled by mountain ranges the north of the county is bordered by Ireland’s pleasure lake - Lough Derg on the River Shannon, while the south west is protected by the Galtee Mountains, the highest inland mountain range in the country. Along the middle of the county stretches a farmland area known as The Golden Vale. Thurles is the home of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) founded in 1884 and the county to this day is still very much a stronghold when it comes to hurling. Roscrea town is one of the oldest in Ireland with Monastic and Norman buildings reflecting the history of the area as well as Cashel Rock to the south of the county. |
