Timoleague is a picturesque village which is situated just 30 miles from Cork City. Perched at the edge of a long sea inlet this friendly tourist village is dominated by the ruins of a 13th century abbey. The abbey was founded by the Franciscan order in 1240 A.D., on the site of a 6th century monastic settlement founded by Saint Molaga. Timoleague Abbey stands picturesquely at the water’s edge in Timoleague at the head of Courtmacsherry bay. It is a commanding ruined abbey with an ancient graveyard and views out across the bay. The name Timoleague comes from the Irish for House of Molaga (Tigh Molaga). The village of Timoleague itself, with its many brightly coloured dwellings and businesses looks like something out of a film. It also has two stunning Churches, one Protestant, one Catholic which are both film friendly and visually interesting. Church of the Nativity of Our Lady in particular is worth a visit. This stunning church with round bell tower overlooks the picturesque village of Timoleague with sea views out over Courtmacsherry Bay. Celtic Romanesque style architecture, built in 1912. With amazing views over the bay and a lovely interior this is a great place for filming. The rounded tower gives it an almost nautical feel.
