The North Side of Cork City is known in part for its large Council Housing Estates built on a large hill. The Glen area was developed in the ‘60’s & 70’s as an ideal solution to the cramped and dilapidated inner city housing that had built up along the docks below. This is a good example of the period, with empty grass areas and cracked pavements but fiercely proud tenants.

Some of the estates, like Glentrasna Drive, have been sold and renovated. It was a typically run down working class estate on the edge of the City’s North side but is now a good example of a rejuvenated (now private) estate within the area. New facades and landscaping/tree planting have made it much more aesthetically pleasing and is home to a new breed of working class family indicative of the Celtic Tiger prosperity years.
