Including Fitzgerald Park and the UCC Sports Grounds, this beautiful, peaceful stretch of the River Lee runs practically all the way to the City Centre from the University on the western edge of Town along the Mardyke Walk. It is a real highlight of Cork.
Very much unaltered in hundreds of years it exudes a time gone by – sleepy Victorian Manor Houses with mature gardens nestling on the river bank. Fishermen quietly passing the day by an old Iron bridge as swans and rowing boats float silently by – you could be in Cambridge, yet it holds a distinctive Irish feel. Its beauty is natural. It has not been redeveloped or manicured .The houses show their age, but in a pleasing way. Close your eyes and you could be back in the late 1800’s. A serene & beautiful spot indeed.
