The film is set in Ireland in the 1960's. It charts the changing world of an eleven year old boy on the threshold of manhood, showing the detail of his everyday life in a small village in County Kildare, his music lessons, his grandfather who drives an imaginary tractor, the boy's insecurity as he picks up on the strained relations between his mother and soldier father - in the face of his father's imminent departure to the Congo. On a long promised day out, we enter the world of a small seaside town, with it's hurdy-gurdies and its rickety dance hall, where his mother is romanced by a fairground charge-hand. We see the boy take his first step towards manhood when he asks a travelling performer in the guise of the ancient god Luadh to make things right for him and his parents - as the film ends we know all will turn out well or will it? It's up to whether we ourselves believe or not.
