Screen Skills Ireland - Developing an Animated Television Series
03 Jul 2019 : News Desk
Screen Skills Ireland
Screen Skills Ireland is seeking new participants for its four-day course - Developing an Animated Television Series, which takes place in Dublin on Tuesday, July 16th.

The course is being conducted by Barbara Slade, an award-winning T.V. writer, creator and exec. Producer, who travels extensively, developing and heading up shows for the international market. The course begins on Tuesday, July 16th and runs 16th to 18th July & 10th of September in Dublin. The cost of the course is €365.

Selling a series these days is difficult. Budgets are down, competition is up, and investors have little time to wade through the sea of material that arrive on a daily basis. So how do you get your fantastic idea to stand out from the crowd, and how do you get them to read yours in that five-minute ‘slot’ before an important lunch meeting?

‘Developing an Animated Television Series’ is an intensive workshop designed especially for our ever-changing industry. Barbara Slade (a writer and creator) is a firm believer in the art of ‘hooking’ a producer or broadcaster with a strong, well developed and short pitch.

In this fun, yet intensive workshop, participants will be carefully guided through a clear and practical system of development and leave with a solid 4-page Series Treatment (mini-bible) ready to take out into the marketplace. In addition, they will be coached in the art of pitching and have an opportunity to pitch their projects to two commissioners who will provide positive and helpful feedback.

Designed especially for writers, producers, and others working within the industry (as well as those who would like to be!) this course will provide participants with a strong development ‘system’ that will apply to any future project, and at the same time bring a new idea to life.

To insure the best experience for students, numbers will be limited.

Topics will include:

  • Finding the ‘hook’ – the key to any successful series
  • Creating and developing your hero
  • Building a strong, organic world
  • Secondary characters that support your hero
  • The important element of conflict
  • Making sure the property has ‘legs’ and can sustain a long running series
  • The stories – Where do great stories come from and how to stay creative
  • Knowing your genre and understanding your target audience
  • How to clearly express your idea/concept and avoid the ‘fluff’
  • The Art of the Pitch

The Intensive Three Day workshop will be followed by writing time and feedback on concepts from Barbara. There will then be a pitching day on the 10th September. The morning will be preparation with Barbara, followed by an afternoon of informal pitching with two commissioners who will provide feedback.

Participant Profile:

Emerging animation writers / writing teams and live action writers / writing teams with a keen interest in animation writing.

Application Procedure:

Please apply online by 10:00 am on Wednesday the 3rd of July. Please email grainne.bennett@screenskillsireland.ie or sorcha.scully@screenskillsireland.ie with any queries.
