2017-02-16 9:00:00 : Katie McNeice
The 31st edition of the LGBT Film Festival kicks off Thursday March 16th, with Peter Foott’s 2016 title starring Seána Kerslake and John Butler’s upcoming school rugby drama set to screen.

The festival which runs until Sunday, March 26th opens with ‘Against the Law’ directed by Fergus O’Brien (The Armstrongs: The Movie), a BBC production, at BFI Southbank. It closes with ‘Signature Move’ from Jennifer Reeder (Signature Move).

Between these titles are fifty features over one hundred short films and a series of special events, workshops and more. Highlights are programmes dedicated to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act which, decriminalising private homosexual acts in England and Wales, and also to a cultural examination of other countries where LGBT rights are still being fought for.

Tricia Tuttle, BFI Deputy Head of Festivals:
“If last year’s 30th anniversary of the Festival was time for reflection on just how far we’ve come, many world events in the 12 months since have reminded us just how vital this event still is. And what a programme we have to offer this year – it’s vibrant, politically engaged, playful, stirring – and with a number of world, international and European premieres on offer, BFI Flare is absolutely the place to see the best new LGBT cinema first.”

‘Handsome Devil’ from John Butler stars Moe Dunford (Patrick’s Day) and Andrew Scott (This Beautiful Fantastic) as teachers, and Nicholas Galitzine (High Strung) and Fionn O’Shea (The Siege of Jadotville) as central student characters Conor and Ned.

It was announced the title will release to Irish cinemas on April 21st from Eclipse Pictures, with the much anticipated first trailer above also released.

‘A Date for Mad Mary’ which picked up the award for Best Irish Feature at the 2016 Galway Film Fleadh will share its place in the Hearts stream with Butler’s title. The drama starring Seána Kerslake released to DVD on Friday February 3rd from Element Pictures Distribution and is also available On Demand from iTunes, Virgin Media, Amazon, Google Play and Volta, among others.
