29 Mar 2016 : Seán Brosnan
Nominated projects are ‘The Hallow’, ‘Room’, ‘Sing Street’ and ‘My Name is Emily’
With the IFTA Awards season well underway and less than two weeks to go until the ceremony on Saturday, April 9th, IFTN takes a look at a talent-laden Sound Category.

Nominated projects this year include acclaimed horror film ‘The Hallow’, the coming of age road drama ‘My Name is Emily’, Oscar nominated drama ‘Room’ and musical comedy-drama ‘Sing Street’.

Nominated for ‘The Hallow’ – Corin Hardy’s lauded creature feature which recently won Best Horror Film at the Empire Awards – are Daniel Crowley, Steve Fanagan, and Garrett Farrell.

After receiving his first nomination last year for another horror film (Ivan Kavanagh’s ‘The Canal’), Daniel Crowley is receiving his second IFTA nod this year. Previous projects of Daniel Crowley’s include Northern Irish shot series ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘The Fall’ as well as the feature films ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ and ‘Shem The Penman Sings Again’. Nominated twice this year (also getting a nod for ‘Room’) is Steve Fanagan. Fanagan has previously won two IFTA Awards (‘Citadel’, ‘Albert Nobbs’) out of five nominations. Fanagan has also picked up a Primetime Emmy nomination for his work on ‘Game of Thrones’. Garnering his fifth nomination this year is Garrett Farrell who has previously won one IFTA for ‘Citadel’. Other nominated projects include ‘Waveriders’, ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Titanic: Blood and Steel’.

The Irish IFTA nominee for Simon Fitzmaurice’s ‘My Name is Emily’ is Fionan Higgins, receiving his first nomination this year. He is nominated alongside Mattias Eklund and Fredrik Dalenfjäll. It has been a busy few years for Higgins with recent credits including Johnny O’Reilly’s ‘Moscow Never Sleeps’, Alan Gilsenan’s ‘Unless’, Liv Ullman’s ‘Miss Julie’ and Paddy Breathnach’s ‘Viva’ while upcoming projects include Jim Sheridan’s ‘The Secret Scripture’ and Richie Smyth’s ‘Jadotville’.

Lenny Abrahamson’s Oscar nominated drama ‘Room’ is also up this year with Niall Brady, Steve Fanagan and Ken Galvin nominated.

Niall Brady has already been recognized for his work on ‘Room’ this year, garnering a nomination at the MPSE Golden Reel Awards in LA last month (along with Peter Blayney). Brady is receiving his ninth IFTA nomination and he has been previously nominated for ‘What Richard Did’, ‘The Guard’, ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Waveriders’, ‘Garage’ and ‘Sinners’, winning for ‘Pure Mule’ in 2005 and ‘Albert Nobbs’ in 2012. Steve Fanagan is a double nominee this year (see profile above for ‘The Hallow’) with Ken Galvin also receiving dual nominations in 2016

Galvin was a double nominee in this category last year also – for ‘Frank’ and ‘Patrick’s Day’ – winning the award for the latter project. He has also previously won IFTA’s for ‘The Silence’, ‘Kings’ and ‘Pure Mule’.

Check out our interview with Niall Brady as well as Steve Fanagan about their work on ‘Room’ here.

Galvin is also nominated for John Carney’s musical drama ‘Sing Street’ alongside Robert Flanagan and Michelle Fingleton.

Robert Flanagan is best known for his work on the films ‘Strangerland’, ‘The Guard’, ‘Calvary’,’ Garage’ and ‘Once’ and the television series ‘Harry Price - Ghost Hunter’, ‘The Widower’, ‘Dr. Who’, ‘Damaged’, ‘Prosperity’ and ‘The Fades’. ‘Sing Street’ is Flanagan’s fifth nominations after previous nods for ‘The Guard’, ‘Essential Killing’, ‘Silent Sonata’ and ‘Garage’. Michelle Fingleton has previously been IFTA nominated for her work on the Emmy-winning series ‘Game of Thrones’ and other previous projects of hers include ‘Charlie’, ‘Clean Break’, ‘Raw’, ‘The Widower’ and the feature films ‘Stella Days’, ‘Kelly + Victor’ and ‘Albert Nobbs’.
