Safe as Houses among Torc Awards for Excellence winners (Day 1)
05 Jun 2024 : News Desk
Celtic Media Festival
Three Irish projects have received awards at the Torc Awards for Excellence, as part of the opening ceremony of Celtic Media Festival 2024.

The opening ceremony of Celtic Media Festival 2024 has seen talent from across the Celtic nations recognised at the Torc Awards for Excellence, with winners taking home prizes as part of The International Summit of Sound and Screen.

The three Irish projects that have received awards are RTÉ Investigates: Sex for Rent for Current Affairs (Screen), Safe as Houses for Short Drama (Screen), and RTÉ Documentary On One: A Dark Night in Foxford for History (Sound).

Earlier this year, Mia Mullarkey won the Best Short Film award for Safe as Houses at the Emerging Directors Awards, and producer Claire McCabe received the Producer of the Year award.

Catriona Logan, Festival Director, said: “It’s been fantastic to kick off proceedings for Celtic Media Festival 2024 by awarding the first Torc Awards for Excellence – the breadth of talent on display has been truly incredible, and we’re so pleased to be about to honour productions from so many countries. There’s still lots more to celebrate tomorrow, and we can’t wait to do it all over again.”

Celtic Media Festival 2024 continues today with guest speaker interviews and panel discussions. Cops and Robbers – Making a Killing in Crime Drama will feature panellists Peter McKenna and David Mcloughlin, writer and producer of the hit Irish Crime Drama Kin. The panel will explore writing crime drama and asking what it takes to stand out in a market that can be oversaturated with similar shows.

Tomorrow, Broadcaster Kaye Adams interviews Kevin Bakhurst, the Director-General of RTÉ, as he comes to the close of a challenging first year at the helm of Ireland's national broadcaster. Bakhurst has previously held a range of senior editorial positions at the BBC, including Controller, BBC News Channel and Deputy Head, BBC Newsroom from 2005.

The 45th Celtic Media Festival takes place in Cardiff's city centre from the 4th to 6th of June 2024 at the Marriott Hotel.
