Animation Ireland Chairman Calls for Tax Relief
14 Sep 2018 :
John Phelan has called on the current government to extend tax relief for the sector in Section 481 of the Finance Act beyond 2020.

Animation Ireland is the trade association for Ireland’s animation studios and represents 25 member studios, which employ more than 1,500 people. Phelan’s call comes after the announcement that three Irish animation projects will pitch to 1,000 broadcasters, investors and other potential partners at Cartoon Forum in Toulouse

Chair of Animation Ireland, John Phelan Announced:

“We have also been calling for RTÉ to support Animation Ireland further and to commission more home-grown animation content to support Irish animation studios. A big challenge for the sector has been recruitment and the shortage of skilled staff, and we hope that the government realise the value of investing in greater education supports for animation, in this regard.’’

Animation Ireland welcomed culture minister Josepha Madigan to a tour of founding member Brown Bag Productions, where she met some of its producers and animators, including Bronagh O’Hanlon, creator and director of ‘Sadie Sparks’, a series produced for Disney.

Brown Bag managing director Cathal Gaffney said:

“It was great to have Minister Madigan here to show her the true scale and potential of animation in Ireland. Animation is now a very technologically advanced industry which uses cutting edge technology and employs extremely talented and technically gifted staff.

“It contributes significantly to the Irish economy and to the value of Irish exports, as most of the shows produced here in Ireland are made for overseas viewers.”

Phelan added:

“Ireland has so many extremely talented animation professionals working in some of the best known and respected animation studios in the world, working with global brands such as Disney, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the new kids on the block Netflix, Amazon and more recently Apple.

“We wanted to showcase this and the economic contribution of up to €100m in any given year, to the minister and emphasise the need for the government to help it to continue to grow and flourish into the future.’’
