Vue Entertainment Acquires Irish Cinema Chain Showtime
03 Jul 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Vue Entertainment, part of Vue International has acquired the Limerick and Ashbourne based Irish cinema chain - Showtime.

This comes as Vue International continues its expansion into the European market with the company also acquiring Polish cinema chain Cinema3D, which will see the UK based company obtain sixteen new sites across the two deals.

The deal also takes Vue Entertainment to 855 screens on 89 sites across the UK & Ireland alone. The company also has a presence in 10 other countries, with 48 sites and 342 screens across Poland and the Baltic region, and a number of multiplexes in Taiwan.

The Cinemas in Limerick and Ashbourne have closed as Vue prepare for the relaunch this Friday, July 6th.

Vue Managing Director of UK and Ireland, Kevin Styles said:

“We are delighted to have been able to secure the Showtime Cinema sites and with it the opportunity to bring our premium big screen experience to more customers in Ireland. We look forward to welcoming the team to Vue and ensuring that the cinemas continue to be a major part of the out-of-home leisure choices in Ireland.”

Showtime owner, Patrick O'Sullivan said:

“Showtime Cinemas have built up a loyal and knowledgeable following among the cinema-going public in Ashbourne and Limerick. I am happy that our customers and staff will have access to Vue Entertainment’s expertise, customer experience and wide range of viewing choices.”

Vue Entertainment was first introduced to Irish customers following its acquisition of Ster Century in 2005, the Slovak cinema company was the first cinema chain to occupy the massive cinema space at Liffey Valley Shopping Centre; Dublin. However, the cinema was completely rebranded under Vue Entertainment following Ster Century's acquisition.

Vue currently operates in ten countries - Ireland, Poland, the UK, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania and Taiwan.

The Irish and Polish deals were carried out by subsidiaries of Vue International and used existing resources, according to Variety.
