IFTA Awards Focus: MAC Make Up & Hair

Nominated projects in this category include ‘All Is By My Side’, ‘Frank’, ‘Ripper Street’ and ‘Vikings’
We continue our countdown to the 2015 IFTA Film & Drama Awards on May 24 with a look at the eminent nominees of the MAC Make Up & Hair category with nominated projects including ‘All Is By My Side’, ‘Frank’, ‘Ripper Street’ and ‘Vikings’.

All eight nominees have experience picking up an IFTA Award. In fact, their accumulative IFTA count stands at a very impressive eleven. With two more awards being handed out on May 24, we take a look at the nominees.

Working on the Jimi Hendrix biopic ‘All Is By My Side’ is Morna Ferguson on Make-Up and Lorraine Glynn on Hair.

Ferguson has previously won an IFTA Award for her work on the television mini-series ‘The Take’ and garnered four other nominations for ‘Loving Miss Hatto’, ‘My Boy Jack’, ‘Middletown’ and ‘Laws Of Attraction’. Her acclaimed work in ‘My Boy Jack’ was also honoured with a BAFTA Award in 2008 while other notable credits include ‘The Guard’, ‘What Richard Did’ and ‘Calvary’ (all of which won the Best Film IFTA). Ferguson has also worked on John Crowley’s ‘Brooklyn’ which will be released to cinemas later in 2015.

Lorraine Glynn, Ferguson’s co-nominee for ‘All Is By My Side’, is also an IFTA-winner having won for the film ‘Albert Nobbs’ in 2012. She was also nominated the same year for her work on ‘Neverland’. Other credits of Glynn’s include ‘Intermission’, ‘Bloody Sunday’, ‘Ordinary Decent Criminal’ and ‘Breakfast On Pluto’. She has also worked on ‘Brooklyn’ and Jim Sheridan’s ‘The Secret Scripture, both of which will be released later in the year.

Nominated for the Make-Up & Hair for Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Frank’ are Lynn Johnston (Make-Up) and Eileen Buggy (Hair).

Lynn Johnston has previously won two IFTA Awards – for ‘Breakfast On Pluto’ and ‘Albert Nobbs’ with the latter project also landing her an Oscar nomination in 2012. Johnston has also been IFTA nominated in the past for ‘Intermission’ and ‘Shadow Dancer’ while other notable credits include ‘Byzantium’, ‘The Wind That Shakes The Barley’ and ‘King Arthur’.

Her co-nominee Eileen Buggy (Hair) won an IFTA Award in 2013 for her work on the Amazon period drama series ‘Ripper Street’, also landing a BAFTA nomination for the show the same year. Buggy has also previously been IFTA-nominated for ‘Shadow Dancer’, ‘Stella Days’ and ‘Zonad’. Other notable credits of Buggy’s include ‘Albert Nobbs’, ‘Boy Eats Girl’ and ‘King Arthur’ and she also worked on Irish co-production ‘The Lobster’ starring Colin Farrell – which will have its’ world premiere in competition at Cannes later this month.

Jennifer Hegarty (Make-Up) tasted IFTA glory in 2008 for her work in the international hit series ‘The Tudors’. Hegarty has also worked on big budget features such as ‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and 2’, ‘Hercules’, ‘Lassie’ and ‘War Horse’.

Carole Dunne (Hair) has also garnered one IFTA win so far in her career – at the inaugural IFTA Awards in 2003 for her work in ‘Watermelon’. Dunne started out as a trainee Hair Stylist on the Oscar-winning ‘My Left Foot’ and went on to work on films such as ‘The Commitments’, ‘In The Name Of The Father’, ‘A Film With Me In It’, ‘Run & Jump’ and ‘Robot Overlords’.

The final nominated project in this category at this year’s IFTA’s is the History Channel’s ‘Vikings’ – which is shot in Ireland.

Nominated for ‘Vikings’ are Tom McInerney (Make-Up) and Dee Corcoran (Hair).

Tom McInerney has been nominated for four IFTA Awards in the past – for ‘Titanic: Blood and Steel’, ‘Camelot’, ‘Prosperity’ and ‘Adam And Paul’. He won the award in 2011 for ‘The Tudors’. McInerney has also worked on ‘Savage’, ‘Garage’, Wild Decembers’ and ‘Traders’ which will be released to Irish cinemas later in the year.

Dee Corcoran is celebrating an IFTA milestone this year as her 2015 nod means that she has been nominated a massive ten times. She has went home with the award on three occasions – twice for ‘The Tudors’ and once for ‘King Arthur’. She has also received two Primetime Emmy nominations for her work on ‘The Tudors’ and other credits of hers include ‘Leap Year’, ‘Veronica Guerin’, ‘Camelot’, ‘Tara Road’ and ‘The Butcher Boy’.
