Northern Irish actor James Nesbitt and English actor Freddie Highmore have been named to star in Simon Fitzmaurice’s debut feature film ‘My Name is Emily’.

Nesbitt (‘The Hobbit’, ‘Five Minutes of Heaven’) will star alongside Highmore (‘Bates Motel’, ‘Spiderwick Chronicles’, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’) in the teenage love story.

The film follows Emily, who, on her 16th birthday escapes from her foster home and sets out to find her father, Robert, a visionary writer locked up in a psychiatric institution.

‘My name is Emily’ is a co-production between Irish companies Newgrange Pictures and Kennedy Films and is set to shoot in summer 2014. Financing for the film is also being funded by the Irish Film Board, BAI & TV3, with UK and Swedish partners also on board.

Director and writer Fitzmaurice was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (ALS) in 2008 – just after his second short film ‘The Sound of People’ screened at the Sundance Film festival. It also won awards at the Belfast Film Festival, Foyle Film Festival and Huesca Film Festival, as well as an Honourable Mention at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival. Shortly after his diagnosis Fitzmaurice started writing the script for ‘My Name is Emily’.

Producers Kathryn Kennedy and Lesley McKimm ran a successful crowd-funding campaign which raised over €100,000 towards the costs of enabling Simon to realise his film. The films finance target is €200,000.

The script for 'My Name is Emily' was completed using the iris-recognition technology that allows Fitzmaurice to write. The Wicklow based director said: “To make this film is the fruition of years of work and a lifetime’s love of film. It’s so invigorating to have the opportunity to work with actors like Jimmy and Freddie who give everything to their craft.”

Nesbitt commented on the original piece of writing from Fitzmaurice: “This film has such a heart and soul. I’m very excited to be a part of it and to be exploring a role I haven’t played before.”

Nesbitt is also set to feature in Danny Boyle’s forthcoming ‘Babylon’, which airs on Channel 4 on Sunday 9th February at 9pm.

Newgrange Pictures (‘Stella Days’, ‘Happy Ever Afters’) will also be in Berlin to close deals on films including indie New York Drama ‘Seeing Chris’ (writer/director Tom Cairns) and the family film ‘The Wish List’, (writer Alex Rose, Director Stephen Woolfenden) based on the Eoin Colfer novel.
