St Ita’s Mental Institution in Portrane has become something of a mythic and mysterious symbol of all mental asylums within the State. The name “Portrane” evokes fear and loathing in the public imagination and yet the public have little real knowledge of what goes on behind the imagined closed doors. For the first time, THE ASYLUM takes an intimate and frank look at life in this now notorious institution.
