The murder of controversial film-maker Theo van Gogh on 2 November 2004 by a Muslim fundamentalist turned Dutch society upside down, bringing to the fore religious and racial tensions that had long been simmering in The Netherlands. The very values Holland was once famous for - tolerance and freedom and especially freedom of speech – came under attack. Alex Hijmans left Holland ten years ago to move to Galway, where he learnt Irish, became a journalist, and a café-owner. When he left, Holland was still a paragon of tolerance and multiculturalism; now the clouds of Jihad and religious tension are gathering over his native country. The Theo van Gogh murder compelled Alex to travel home last January to take an in-depth look at the changes that have come over Holland since what the Dutch call “2/11”.
