'Nation Builders' is a series of three documentaries which tells of the life and times of key public servants in the history of the Irish State - those behind the scenes who shaped our nation.
Boyle’s documentary sheds new light on a little known area of Irish foreign policy - Ireland and the League of Nations. With cinematic flair, it tells the story of Sean Lester, the role he had in building the reputation of a new nation abroad and how he went on to become the Last Secretary General of the League of Nations. Lester was an internationalist, an Irishman, an Irish nationalist. His remarkable career has been overlooked by a history that forgets defeat. The League of Nations was more than an ideal and it was not a failure. The League paved the way for collective peace and international law and the United Nations. Through the war, Lester ensured that the flame was kept alive and was handed over. Our countryman did the Irish nation and the world a great service. In a story never told on screen, this documentary remembers him.
