A family film telling the story of two children, each of whom dreams of belonging to the other's world. Chris feels bored with his whole family, and longs for the excitement and adventure of a travelling circus, while the mysterious androgynous Joe wants to be part of a loving and settled environment. The film contrasts the cruel reality of the adult world in which Joe lives with the comfort and obvious security of Chris's seemingly utopian life.
