Based in St. Petersburg. Poprischin, a clerk falls madly in love with his boss'es daughter, Sophie. However she does not return his affections, prefering a young Lieutenant. Frustrated by his lack of social status he develops a fantasy world, into which he retreats. In his fantasy world he imagines himself in positions of grandeur.
