Golden Globes 2022: Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast wins Best Screenplay at non-televised ceremony
10 Jan 2022 : Nathan Griffin
Belfast picked up Best Screenplay at the Golden Globes.
Northern Irish writer/director Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast picked up Best Screenplay at Sunday night’s Golden Globe ceremony, in what was a disappointing night for Irish nominees.

Amid scrutiny over diversity within the ranks of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and soring Covid-19 cases in the US, the Golden Globe organisers decided that this year’s winners would be revealed behind closed doors in Beverly Hilton.

No stars were present at the ceremony, which was not televised following NBC’s decision to cancel its annual broadcast after HFPA was criticised for “lack of diversity among its membership and unethical business practices," according to Variety.

Branagh’s win for writing was the only award picked up by Northern Irish Oscar favourite Belfast, which missed out on the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture to Jane Campion’s critically acclaimed neo-western The Power of the Dog.

Irish actors Caitriona Balfe, Ruth Negga, Jamie Dornan, and Ciaran Hinds missed out on awards on the night.

Balfe (Belfast) and Negga (Passing), who were both nominated for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture, missed out to rising star Ariana DeBose for her performance in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.

Hinds and Dornan were also both nominated for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture for their performances in Branagh’s semi-autobiographical drama Belfast. Again, both missed out to another rising star Kodi Smit-McPhee for his performance in Campion’s The Power of the Dog.
