Niamh Algar named among Breakthrough Brits
Irish actor Niamh Algar has been selected as one of BAFTA & Netflix’s Breakthrough Brits for 2019.

The 20-strong list of nominees includes talent from the film, television and gaming industry.

BAFTA Breakthrough Brits showcase and support the next generation of British creative talent in film, games, and television, identifying excellent individuals who have had a breakthrough year in the industry.

A graduate of Bow Street’s academy of screen acting, Algar’s first major role came as ‘Olivia’ in Lorcan Finnegan’s horror film Without Name, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival in 2016. Following the success of the London screening, Algar was picked up by Independent Talent.

Since then, Algar has enjoyed a successful couple of years featuring in several television dramas and films; one of which, saw her receive a first IFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Nick Kelly’s feel-good Irish feature film ‘The Drummer and the Keeper’ in 2018, which co-starred Peter Coonan, Jacob McCarty, and Dermot Murphy.

More recently, Algar starred in a leading role in Shane Meadow’s Channel 4 drama The Virtues, which received major acclaim after it aired earlier this year.

Algar has also featured in Channel 4’s new series ‘The Bisexual’ starring Desiree Akhavan and Maxine Peake, Pure alongside Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders) and BBC political thriller ‘MotherFatherSon’ starring Helen McCrory, Richard Gere, and Billy Howle, which saw Algar play a former soldier in Northern Ireland.

Algar will also return to the big screen alongside Barry Keoghan early next year in Nick Rowland’s dark family drama Calm with Horses. The film, which was shot on the west coast of Ireland last year, is being produced by Film4 and Michael Fassbender’s DMC Films. She will also feature in Deadpan Pictures new dramedy The Last Right, which releases later this year.
