Focus Features Acquires International Rights to Northern Irish Drama 'Normal People'
26 Mar 2019 : Nathan Griffin
Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson in 'Normal People'
Focus Features has bought a number of international rights to Northern Irish drama ‘Normal People’ starring Oscar-nominated actors Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson.

The deal will see the film distributed through Universal Pictures International (UPI) across the UK with further territories to be confirmed. The distributor declined to specify when asked by Screen Daily, who report that the UPI works across a host of countries including Italy, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Russia, Korea, and Australia.

Sales agent Bankside Films has also struck deals with distributors  in territories including India (PVR), China (DDDream), Indonesia (Sahamongkol Films), Israel (Forum Films), Greece (Tanweer), Latin America (California), Middle East (Front Row), Scandinavia (Scanbox), South Africa (TMF), Spain (Inopia), Turkey (Tanweer ), Airlines (Entertainment in Motion) and former Yugoslavia (Fox Vision).

‘Normal People’ has now sold-out worldwide apart from Canada where negotiations are said to be underway. This news follows Bleeker Street’s acquisition of the US rights to the film late last year.

Produced by Brian J. Falconer (Out of Orbit), David Holmes and Piers Tempest, ‘Normal People’ was shot completely on location in Northern Ireland and is directed by duo Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn.

Written by Owen McCafferty, the film sees Neeson and Manville play an everyday couple with an extraordinary love who must find the humor and grace to face a year of adversity.

Jo Bamford for Tempo Productions, Stephen Kelliher for Bankside Films, Natascha Wharton for the BFI, Phil Hunt and Compton Ross for Head Gear Films/Metrol Technology and Mark Huffam will serve as executive producers on the project.

‘Normal People‘ is a Canderblinks Films and Out of Orbit production, which received funding from Northern Ireland Screen in association with Head Gear Films, Metrol Technology and Kreo Films, and the British Film Institute using National Lottery funds.

The deal was handled by Bankside Films who represent the filmmakers.
