Starline Entertainment to Handle Worldwide Sales of Tom Collin's 'Penance'
29 Mar 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Starline Entertainment has secured worldwide sales for Tom Collin’s bilingual feature film ‘Penance’.

Centred around the events of the 1916 Easter Rising & the beginning of ‘The Troubles’ in 1960s Derry City, ‘Penance’ stars Peter Coonan (‘The Drummer & The Keeper’, ‘Love/Hate’), Barry Barnes (‘71’), Gerard McSorley (‘Omagh’), and Diona Doherty ('Soft Border Patrol', 'Derry Girls').

‘Penance’ follows the story of Catholic priest (‘Peter Coonan) as he is forced to confront his past as a firebrand preacher promoting violence against British rule in Ireland when a former protégé who fell under his influence reappears 50 years later as a hardened IRA gunman.

Speaking about the film, Tom Collins said:

“In these times of loudly debating nationalism, borders and Brexit, I hope this film, through the central character’s story, underlines that we are always a few heartbeats away from violence and we can live to regret ill-judged rhetoric.”

The film was written by Tom Collins & Greg O’Braonain and shot by DoP, Ciaran Tanham. Other prominent credits on the film include: Dermot Diskin; Editor, Maeve Paterson; Costume Design, Sound; Nikki Moss, and Pol Brennan; Score.

‘Penance’ was produced by Tom Collins Derry-based production company De Facto Films & Edwina Forkins’ Zanzibar Films. The film was also supported by Irish language broadcaster TG4, The Irish Film Board, Northern Ireland Screen, and the Irish Language Broadcast Fund.

Starline Co-founder Carey Fitzgerald, who worked with Collins on ‘Kings’ said:

“Indisputably one of the best directors working in Ireland today, Tom’s tremendous capacity for human insight has always been at the heart of his films, engaging audiences in the remarkable personal journeys of vividly realized characters. ’Penance’ more than demonstrates these unique gifts and we’re thrilled to be bringing it to a worldwide audience.”

Collins has been selected as Ireland’s Foreign Language entry for the Academy Awards® twice before, with previous entries ‘An Bronntanas’ (2014) & ‘Kings’ (2008).

The film is expected to go on national release in Ireland during Summer 2018.
