‘Vermeer, Beyond Time’ Documentary Releases to Coincide with National Gallery of Ireland Exhibition
09 May 2017 : Katie McNeice
French director Jean-Pierre Cottet directs this portrait of one of the most loved and well-known artists in the world, Johannes Vermeer, produced by ARTE France and with Soho Moon Pictures on board in Ireland.

The forthcoming exhibition entitled ‘Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting: Inspiration and Rivalry’ is organised by the National Gallery of Ireland in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre, Paris, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

It opens on June 17th and runs through to September 17th, having already set records in its Paris venue and to critical acclaim.

The documentary not only examines work, but family life including his conversion to Catholicism, his artistic contemporaries and the wider world of the short lived Dutch Golden Age of the 17th Century.

Through this he sheds light on the painter who disappeared from memory following his death at forty-five years of age in 1675, only to soar in popularity once more when he is rediscovered two hundred years later.

‘Vermeer, Beyond Time’ screens at the following cinemas on Wednesday 10th May: Gate Cork, IMC Dun Laoghaire, Light House, Movies @ Dundrum and SGC Dungarvan. Additional dates throughout the Summer will be announced.

Dr Adriaan Waiboer, National Gallery of Ireland, Head of Collections and Research:
“Johannes Vermeer is frequently portrayed as an enigmatic figure working largely in isolation, but this exhibition clearly demonstrates how Vermeer’s subjects, compositions and figure types owe much to works by contemporary Dutch artists, including Gerrit Dou, Gerard ter Borch and Frans van Mieris, all of whom were more successful and influential in their time.”

‘Vermeer, Beyond Time’ is distributed in Ireland by Eclipse Pictures.
