The Galway Film Fleadh, in association with IFTA, welcomed star of stage and screen, Brian Cox, for an entertaining and insightful public interview as part of the 36th edition of the festival.
The public interview was led by RTÉ Arena presenter, Kay Sheehy, took place on Sunday, 14th of July at 3pm at the Galmont Hotel.
Cox, most recently known for his role in HBO’s Succession, spoke about his work with Irish talent, having starred in Braveheart and Rob Roy, and praised Conor McPherson with whom he worked on three plays, saying “to me, he’s the great young Irish playwright”.
Cox spoke of being young, coming from a background of poverty in Dundee, and seeing actors like Tom Courtenay and Albert Finney in films as what inspired him to realise he could pursue a career in acting. He said that unfortunately now, he says, there are less opportunities for working class kids in the UK to pursue acting from a young age.
He drew comparisons between working in film and theatre: “When I was a kid it was all about cinema. But then I realised the value of theatre. The liveness is unique. There’s nothing like it.” He also discussed working with Daniel Day-Lewis in Jim Sheridan's The Boxer, and his experiences with some of the auteur filmmakers he has worked with, including Spike Jonze and Spike Lee, of whom he said “You feel immediately at home. You feel like you can do your work”.
He finished by asserting that he has no plans to retire from acting: “I’m 78 and I’m enjoying it as much as I ever did. And that energy transmits energy.”
The public interview with Brian Cox will be broadcast on RTE Radio 1 on Wednesday evening from 7pm.
