Robbie Ryan Wins Cinematography Award at the British Independent Film Awards 2018
15 Nov 2018 : Nathan Griffin
The British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) has announced the first of this year’s award winners.

Irish Cinematographer Robbie Ryan was one of five winners to receive a BIFA award for their work on Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘The Favourite’.

The Element Pictures production took five awards including Best Casting for Dixie Chassay, Best Cinematography for Robbie Ryan, Best Costume Design for Sandy Powell, Best Make Up & Hair Design for Nadia Stacey and Best Production Design for Fiona Crombie. The Irish production company received a total of 18 nominations earlier this month for ‘Disobedience’ and ‘The Favourite’.

Speaking about receiving the award, Robbie Ryan told IFTN:

"I’m delighted and excited to win the BIFA. The favourite is a special film and it’s fantastic to see it get this recognition."

‘You Were Never Really Here’ won Best Music for Jonny Greenwood and Best Sound for Paul Davies.

Nick Fenton, Julian Hart and Chris Gill won the award for Best Editing for ‘American Animals’.

‘Early Man’ Visual Effects Supervisor Howard Jones was the winner of Best Effects.

Speaking about Element Pictures BIFA nominations, Producer Ed Guiney told IFTN:

“These nominations are a major endorsement for both The Favourite and Disobedience and we are thrilled for all the teams involved, they give us great momentum as we head towards our North American release later this month for The Favourite and our UK/Irish release for Disobidence.”

To better recognise the wealth of exceptional talent working on British independent films, BIFA introduced these nine award categories in 2017. The nominations and winners have been chosen by BIFA voters over the course of three rounds of viewing, discussion and voting.

The recipient of the 2018 Richard Harris Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Actor to British Film will be announced next week. Winners in the remaining categories will be unveiled at the ceremony on Sunday 2 December at Old Billingsgate, which will mark the 21st anniversary of the Awards.

All other winners will be announced on at the BIFA Awards ceremony on Sunday, December 2nd.
