‘Patrick’s Day’ Writer/Director Terry McMahon on Public Response to Television Premiere
09 Jan 2017 : Katie McNeice
Moe Dunford as Patrick
The Irish feature film starring Moe Dunford (Vikings) had its premiere on RTÉ 2 on January 2nd and went on to trend across social media for days as the public applauded its Irish talent and quality, original storytelling.

With comparisons drawn by viewers to Jack Nicholson classic ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,’ McMahon’s second feature film sees a young Irish man with mental health issues become involved with a suicidal flight attendant.

‘Patrick’s Day’ earned McMahon the IFTA for Best Script – Film in 2015, in addition to awards for Best Sound and Best Actor for Dunford.

Additional nominations include Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Catherine Walker), Best Original Score (Ray Harman), Best Editing (Emer Reynolds) and Best Cinematography (Michael Lavelle). Dunford was also nominated for the Irish Academy’s Rising Star award in the same year.

The project also won top prizes not only at Galway Film Fleadh and Cork film Festival but international recognition such as its triple awards for Best Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Feature Film at Woodstock Film Festival in 2014.

Terry McMahon, Director:
"Consumed with the Home Sweet Home campaign and not having terrestrial television meant I didn't see ‘Patrick’s Day’ when it was being transmitted on RTÉ. A few friends began texting to say the film was blowing up on Twitter and Facebook. Then they said it was beginning to ‘trend’. Being a technophobe moron I don't fully understand what "trending" actually means and I still don't know how it works.

“Apparently it's an amazing thing. Means vast amounts of people are talking about a given subject. Lindsay Campbell from the co-producers Underground Films is the expert. Then the film ended and the real outpouring began. Hundreds of messages. People connecting. Deeply moving. And, just like Home Sweet Home the fact that ‘Patrick’s Day’ provoked such emotional power is an indication of just how profound our capacity is to look out for each other."
