Irish Short Film News
24 Mar 2009 :
Thomas Heffron’s ‘The Confession’ and Brian Durnin’s ‘Of Best Intentions’ have been selected to screen in the Tribeca Film Festival. US Festivals in Cleveland and Nashville will also feature a line up of Irish short titles as well as ‘Finscéal Pháidí’ being selected for Palm Beach International Film Festival.

‘The Confession’, based on a young man nervously confessing his sins to a priest who seems to be more interested in gossiping about the women of the town, will screen at the US festivals Cleveland (March 19 -29) and Nashville (April 16- 23). Irish titles also to screen at Nashville include ‘James’ (Connor Clements), IFTA nominee ‘Martin’ (Sean Branigan) and ‘Morse Collectors’ (David Cooke) while at Cleveland shorts include ‘The Basket Case’ (Owen O'Neill), ‘Lucky Escape’ (Shane McCabe), ‘Finscéal Pháidí’ (Colm Bairéad), ‘Team Sleep’ (Danann Breathnach), ‘Treeclimber’ (Michael Kinirons) and ‘The Wednesdays’ (Conor Ferguson).

‘Finscéal Pháidí’, written and directed by Colm Bairéad, has also been selected to screen in Palm Beach International Film Festival which will take place from April 23-27 at various locations throughout Palm Beach County. The short follows 9 year-old Páidí who discovers his stepfather-to-be is the evil creature from Ireland's most famous myth and was commissioned as part of the Filmbase / TG4 Lasair scheme with support from Gael Linn and Foras na Gaeilge.

Colm Bairéad and Greg Corcoran are currently developing a slate of projects for both cinema and TV including ‘An Rún’, a feature length Irish language drama currently in development with TG4.

Shorts ‘Gone Fishing’ directed by Chris Jones and ‘The Morse Collectors’ by David Cooke are among the 12 finalists to be selected by the film and media insurance specialist Performance in its prestigious short film competition. From the shortlist, six films will be chosen to have their films screened at a prestigious awards ceremony being held at BAFTA on Wednesday 25th March 2009. The final six will compete to win £5,000 in cash, £4,500 of post-production services, and the weekend hire costs of a £60,000 Red One camera shooting package worth up to £1,500.

Bootstrap Films has signed a distribution deal with global media distribution specialist Quat Media, Toronto, Canada, for it’s short film, ‘Vicious Circle’ directed by Alan Walsh. ‘Vicious Circle’ is a short drama, set in 1916 during Irelands struggle for freedom and is paralleled with today’s attempts to bring peace in Northern Ireland. Shot in black and white using original footage, it is a thought-provoking story about what happens when people do not trust each other, resulting in a continuing circle of unnecessary violence.

Speaking on deal with Quat Media John Phelan of Bootstrap Films says: “We’ve signed a 4 year world-wide distribution deal with them. It’s very difficult to get shorts out there so that audiences can see them. We are very pleased to be working with Quat Media as it adds an additional pipleline for our short titles. “
