Network Ireland Television Launching 'Titanic' Projects at MIPCOM
28 Sep 2011 :
MIPCOM
Network Ireland Television (NITV) are set to launch two ‘Titanic’ themed projects at major TV Market, MIPCOM, in Cannes, next week. This is the independent distribution company’s 34th consecutive participation on the Ireland on Screen national stand, sponsored and arranged by Enterprise Ireland.

Taking pride of place among the new content that NITV will be launching at MIPCOM are two projects that relate to the forthcoming centenary of the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912. These are ‘The Titanic Inquiry’, an intense court room drama based on the actual transcripts of the official British Government Inquiry into the Californian Incident in Westminster later that same year. This production is being produced by The Hole in The Wall Gang, in Belfast for BBC NI.

The other project is documentary, ‘Titanic, Born in Belfast’, which is the story of the building of this magnificent vessel in the Harland and Wolff shipyard in that city. It also shows how the shadow of the failure that hung over that city, because of the Titanic disaster, has finally given way to a more positive mentality. The achievement of the people of Belfast in building such an engineering marvel is finally being recognised and celebrated in its hometown for the great accomplishment that it was.

NITV Managing Director Derry O’Brien says “The MIPCOM Market is likely to be over-flowing with high profile Titanic related titles being produced for next year’s centenary. However, we feel that because of production costs etc these prestige dramas and forensic documentaries will need to be sold to the major international broadcasters to recoup their production budgets. We are confident that our two Titanic titles will still find their niches with the cable/satellite channels, VOD and DVD Distributors.”

Other new documentary titles to be launched by NITV at MIPCOM include; ‘What in the World’ Series 4, (KMF Productions) and a new 10 part series profiling the careers of Irish acting and directing talent like Brendan Gleeson, Saoirse Ronan, Neil Jordan, Jim Sheridan and Fionnula Flanagan called ‘Movie Talk’.

Single documentary titles include ‘The Irish in Hollywood’, Loopline Films ‘Jimmy Murakami – Non Alien’ and Motive Television’s ‘The Irish of 9/11’. ‘The Irish in Hollywood’ is based on Steve Brennan’s book, Emeralds in Tinseltown, this feature documentary focuses on the Irish contribution to 100 years of cinema. Directed and Produced by Paul Howard for Imagine Ireland, it previously aired on TV3, Christmas Day 2010.

On the drama front, NITV is promoting the powerful two hour production, ‘Betrayal of Trust: The Fr Brendan Smyth Story’, the regrettably factual child abuse drama that has been very well reviewed when it was recently broadcast on both BBC NI and RTE. “This is one of our best programmes slates ever,” says O’Brien, “and we are optimistic that it will be very favourably received by our international buyers at MIPCOM.”
