The Arts Council announces information about forthcoming film awards
20 Jul 2020 : Nathan Griffin
The Arts Council of Ireland
The Arts Council has announced a number of forthcoming film awards including the Film Bursary Award, the Film Project 2021 Award, the Authored Works Award, and the Reel Art Award, for which the deadlines will fall between July and October 2020.

Applications for the Film Bursary Award are already open, while the other funding initiative will be opening over the weeks ahead.

Please note that applications for all awards will only be accepted through the Arts Council’s online services website. It is recommended that new applicants allow five working days for registration before making an application.

Film Bursary Award – deadline 17:30 Thursday 30 July 2020

The purpose of the award is to support individual professional artists in the field of experimental and non-narrative film-making. The award emphasises the value and benefit to an artist’s development derived from an extended process of engagement with their practice at any stage of their career. The award therefore provides artists with the time and resources to think, research, reflect, and engage with their arts practice.

Applications for Film Bursary Award must be made directly to the Arts Council before 17:30 on Thursday, 30 July 2020. The window for making applications opens on Tuesday 30 June 2020. Guidelines and details of the application process can be found on our website on the available funding section.

Film Project 2021 Award – deadline 17:30 Thursday 10th September 2020

The purpose of the Film Project Award is to support the making of high-quality and creatively ambitious film work of an experimental nature that would be unlikely to receive support from other funding sources. The work should be filmic and be made with a view to engaging and challenging audiences. It should be made for public exhibition in cinema settings in the first instance, though secondary exhibition in other contexts and on digital platforms may follow.

Applications for the Film Project Award must be made directly to the Arts Council before 17:30 on Thursday 10th September 2020. The window for making applications opens on Tuesday 11th August 2020. Guidelines and details of the application process will be published in July 2020.

Authored Works Award – deadline 17:30 Thursday 1 October 2020

The purpose of Authored Works is to provide film artists with the creative and editorial freedom to make a feature-length authored cultural film work from a strong artistic point of view. Films must be artist-led.  One film will be supported in 2020. A total fund of up to €200,000 will be made available to the successful applicant (to include a production budget of €185,000 and further exhibition support of €15,000). Only films that can be made within this budget will be considered. The film must be completed to premiere at the Irish Film Institute, the Arts Council’s exhibition partner, at an agreed date in 2022.

Applications for Authored Works Award must be made directly to the Arts Council before 17:30 on Thursday, 1 October 2020. The window for making applications opens on 1 September 2020. Guidelines and details of the application process will be published in August 2020 on our website on the available funding section.

Reel Art Award – deadline 17:30 Thursday 8 October 2020

The purpose of Reel Art is to provide film artists with the opportunity to make highly creative, imaginative and experimental documentaries on an artistic theme for cinema exhibition. Two films will be supported in 2020. A total fund of up to €102,500 will be made available to each of the successful applicants (to include a production budget of €90,000 and further exhibition support of €12,500). Only films that can be made within this budget will be considered. The films must be completed to premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival, the Arts Council’s exhibition partner, in February 2022.

Applications for Reel Art Award must be made directly to the Arts Council before 17:30 on Thursday, 8 October 2020. The window for making applications opens on 8 September 2020. Guidelines and details of the application process will be published in Augus 2020 on our website on the available funding section.
