BAFTAs 2023: Wins for Banshees and An Irish Goodbye
20 Feb 2023 : Lucien Waugh-Daly
Still from An Irish Goodbye
There were multiple Irish winners at last night's BAFTA Film Awards in London as Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin and two of its actors took home gold, along with An Irish Goodbye winning British Short Film.

McDonagh accepted the Outstanding British Film and Best Original Screenplay trophies, while Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan won in the Supporting Actress and Actor categories.

Directors Tom Berkeley and Ross White accepted the Short Film award, with actors Seamus O'Hara and James Martin joining them on stage, with the filmmakers thaking their "small and mighty cast and crew".

Martin McDonagh joked when receiving the award for Outstanding British Film "I know every Irish person in the cast and crew are going 'best what?'" but pointed out that the stand-in donkey used for the film was, in fact, English.

It was the first BAFTA win for both Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon. Condon's win followed a brief announcement error whereby Carey Mulligan was incorrectly named the winner by a sign language interpreter for guest presenter, the deaf actor Troy Kotsur.

Co-stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson did not win at the ceremony, with Farrell losing out to Elvis star Austin Butler and Gleeson losing out to Keoghan for the same film.

Another Irish winner was VFX artist Richard Baneham who shared the Visual Effects prize for Avatar: The Way of Water with fellow artists Daniel Barrett, Joe Letteri and Eric Saindon.

An Cailín Ciúin was nominated for both Film Not In The English Language and Best Adapted Screenplay, both of which it lost to All Quiet On The Western Front.

The German-language drama, released by Netflix, was the night's biggest winner, winning Best Film and Best Director. Meanwhile, Cate Blanchett won Best Actress and Aftersun - starring BAFTA nominee Paul Mescal - won Best Debut Film for its writer/director Charlotte Wells.

Paul Mescal, The Banshees of Inisherin, An Cailín Ciúin and An Irish Goodbye will all compete once more at next month's Oscars.
