Filmbase’s Digital Filmmaking course returns on July 28 for a 12-week run, with a number of successful Irish filmmakers on board to lend their mentoring skills.

Conor Barry, producer of IFTA Award-winning film ‘Savage’, will teach the students how to produce a short film, while Sonya Supple Gildea, director of shorts ‘Bua’ and ‘Godless’, and who previously worked on ‘The Tudors’ mini-series, will teach the directing modules.

The course covers training in all aspects of short filmmaking, from script development, producing, directing, storyboarding, casting and production design. It will also offer practical sessions in camera, lighting and location sound.

Emmy-nominated sound man Noel Quinn (Michael Collins, Butcher Boy), art director Padraig O’Neill (Adam and Paul, Garage) and camera and lighting tutor Aidan Maguire (Joy) will also teach modules on the programme.

Students on the course will develop two films over a three-day shoot, using Canon DSLR cameras. Dublin’s Screen Scene post-production house, which previously worked on ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘George Gently’, will edit the films.

Students from the spring Digital Filmmaking course have just completed their two films, ‘Clues’ and ‘Evacuation’, which starred ‘Ballykissangel’ actress Deirdre Donnelly. The group has since set up their own collective, Curved Films, with the view to further develop their skills and collaborate on new filmmaking projects.

Filmbase’s Tristan Hutchinson is the Digital Filmmaking course co-ordinator, and says the course is designed to develop “the skillset and confidence of tomorrow’s new breed of independent filmmakers”.

Former student and director of ‘Clues’ Kathy Kelly said the course was a “fantastic mix of instruction from experienced, remarkable tutors and practical hands on learning”.

Filmbase also recently launched a new Masters course in Digital Feature Film Production. This will start in September and is one year-long.

The Digital Filmmaking course will start on July 28 and finish on October 14. For more information, contact the course co-ordinator and production training officer Tristan Hutchinson at trainingofficer@filmbase.ie, or call 01 679 6716, or visit Filmbase.
