‘Pyjama Girls’ World Premiere at Stranger Than Fiction
31 Mar 2010 :
Pyjama Girls
Maya Derrington’s hotly anticipated Irish feature documentary ‘Pyjama Girls’ will open the 2010 Stranger Than Fiction Festival, taking place at Dublin’s IFI from 15 – 18 April 2010. This year’s expanded programme includes a selection of 22 documentaries.

Derrington’s feature directorial debut is described by the organises as a film that “doesn’t disappoint” which captures the ups and downs of working class teenage life behind the enigmatic and subversive statement of wearing pyjamas in public. Derrington will participate in a post screening Q&A with audience members following the film's world premiere.

Also featured in the lineup, which includes 19 premiere screenings, is ‘Space Tourists’, following a Russian would-be cosmonaut achieving her dreams of becoming the first female space tourist at the cost of a mere $20 million, while ‘Videocracy’ looks at the future of political power and the media through the lens of Berlusconi’s Italy; ‘South of the Border’ shows Oliver Stone aiming to expose U.S media distortions of the politics of Central and South America; and ‘The Sun Behind The Clouds’ examines the tensions between a new generation of Tibetan radicals and the moderate line of their leader, the Dalai Lama.  Other highlights include Nicolas Entel’s ‘Sins of my Father, David Colvard’s ‘Family Affair’ and Ben Steinbauer’s ‘Winnebago Man’.

Featured among the selection is another Irish produced film, ‘Horses’, which was written and directed by Liz Mermin, is a challenging documentary which follows three promising, charismatic horses over the course of one rather difficult racing year.   This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Mermin.

In addition, two documentaries produced by John Murray for Irish based Crossing the Line Films will be showing.  ‘Broken Tail’ follows a wildlife cameraman as he travels through India, piecing together the extraordinary last journey of Broken Tail - the tiger he helped to transform into one of the worlds most famous before it fled and went on the run.  ‘A Prayer For the Wind Horse’ was filmed on the Tibet-Nepal border as the director/producer John Murray follows Kharma Tshering, a man who is guiding he wife and children through one of the most hazardous human endeavours on the planet.

Closing the festival on Sunday 18 April is New Zealand’s yodelling, lesbian comedy duo ‘The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls’.
