Colin Farrell and Martin McDonagh win major prizes at Venice Film Festival
12 Sep 2022 :
McDonagh, Farrell, Gleeson and Condon in Venice.
Martin McDonagh’s hugely anticipated Irish feature film The Banshees of Inisherin has proven a hit with critics and audiences alike following its world premiere at Venice Film Festival where it received a 15-minute standing ovation.

The film marks the emphatic reunion of McDonagh with actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson following their collaboration on 2008 hit comedy In Bruges.

With Oscar expectations already high following McDonagh’s critical success with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in 2016, the writer/director has cemented his new dark comedy as a frontrunners for the upcoming Academy Award nominations with The Banshees of Inisherin winning two awards at La Biennale over the weekend.

The first of these was the Volpi Cup for Best Actor, which was virtually present to Colin Farrell. Speaking in a video message, Farrell said he was "utterly shocked” and “thrilled” to receive the award, paying homage to his “dear friend” Martin McDonagh and Brendan Gleeson, as well as the rest of the cast and crew.

McDonagh, who was there in person, picked up the Best Screenplay award stating it was the perfect ending for The Banshees of Inisherin at the Venice Film Festival.

Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, The Banshees of Inisherin follows lifelong friends Padraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship. A stunned Padraic, aided by his sister Siobhan (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), endeavours to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer. But Padraic's repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences.

The key crew include cinematographer and regular McDonagh collaborator Ben Davis, costume designer Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh, production designer Mark Tildesley, and editor Mikkel E.G. Nielsen. Carter Burwell is composing the score. McDonagh and his frequent collaborators Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin of Blueprint Pictures are producing for Searchlight Pictures and Film4.

The Banshees of Inisherin opens in Irish cinemas October 21.
