Magamedia musical comedy series ‘Eipic’ to commence on TG4 next month
06 Jan 2016 : Seán Brosnan
'Eipic'
New Magamedia comedy series ‘Eipic’ will be broadcast on TG4 at 10pm for six weeks from Thursday, 4th February 2016.

‘Eipic’ is described an “off-beat low-fi comedy drama that follows the fortunes of five rural teenagers who take over their local abandoned post office in 2016 to start a musical revolution”. The series is set against the backdrop of the 1916 centenary celebrations.

Penned by Mike O'Leary (‘Misfits’: ‘Strung Out’), produced by Ciara Nic Chormaic (‘Am an Ghátair’) and directed by Louise Ní Fhiannachta (‘Rúbaí’, ‘Páidí Ó Sé: Rí an Pharóiste’), ‘Eipic’ is designed by Nicola Moroney (‘Corp + Anam’) and edited by Conall de Cléir (‘Cré na Cille’), with Colm Hogan (‘An Klondike’) as DOP. The series was shot last summer on location in Woodford, Co. Galway.

The story follows misunderstood Sully who gets wind of an online music video competition and sees it as his means of escaping the grim be-grudgery of his hometown, Dobhar. He assembles a local band of teenage oddballs and degenerates in a rebellion against boredom, in the hopes of leading them on a journey out of their rural town and onto a national stage.

Inspired by an anonymous online presence that looks remarkably like Michael Collins, the gang break into the abandoned local Post Office setting it up as their base of operations and they begin a musical revolution.

Writer Mike O’Leary said, “Youth television - if we can even call it that anymore, has seen some ground-breaking and genre-defining work emerge in the last few years on the other side of the Irish Sea. The canon was crying out for a show with a uniquely Irish twist on this most universal of stories - growing up. While authentic, real and wild were the guiding principles in creating the world of ‘Eipic’, I always had this one concept at the back of my mind: this should look like TV drama penned by Flann O'Brien on the Monday after Electric Picnic.”

Speaking about ‘Eipic’, producer Ciara Nic Chormaic says, "It turns all the usual stereotypes of Irish drama on their heads. It is the first post watershed teen drama to be broadcast on Irish television and was devised to capture contemporary Irish teenagers' lives... with a hint of magic realism and big laughs thrown in for good measure.”

The 6 x 32 minute series was produced by Galway-based Magamedia with funding from TG4, the BAI and Section 481.
