Pat Shortt To Star in Abrahamson’s ‘Garage’
08 Aug 2006 :

Pat Shortt

Irish actor/comedian Pat Shortt (Man About Dog, Killinaskully) has landed the lead role in Lenny Abrahamson’s feature ‘Garage’. The IFTA winning director of ‘Adam & Paul’ begins principal photography next week - he spoke to IFTN about his latest project.

'Garage' is written by Mark O’Halloran, who also wrote and starred in 'Adam & Paul'. Their earlier film, about a hapless pair of Dublin junkies, garnered the director a Best Director IFTA in 2004 and multiple nominations for the cast and crew of the film. This latest offering is another tragic-comedy and is set in the world of petrol garages in rural Ireland. Pat Shortt will play Josie, described by the director as a “dogs-body caretaker” of a backwater petrol pump. The film follows Josie as he searches for love, acceptance and the best place to display the motor oils.

Relative unknown 15 year old Conor J. Ryan joins the headline cast which also includes Don Wycherley (Veronica Guerin), Anne Marie Duff (Shameless) and Dennis Conroy. Supporting cast features Andrew Bennett, George Costigan (Calendar Girls), Deirdre Donnelly (Ballykissangel), Gary Lilburn and John Keogh (Killinaskully).

Shooting on 35mm, the six week production will shoot on location around Dublin, Galway, Offaly and Tipperary. Abrahamson has enlisted a talented crew with Peter Robertson (Inside I’m Dancing, Song For a Raggy Boy) taking on DoP duties. Costumes are by Sonya Lennon, Production Design by Padraig O'Neill, Music by Stephen Rennicks and Editor is Isobel Stephenson, all of whom worked on Abrahamson’s earlier film.

Speaking to IFTN just days before his second feature rolls, Abrahamson is confident about the film. However, following the critical and commercial success of his debut feature there is an inevitable air of expectation around his second project. "I think there is a bit of pressure" says the director, "but I try not to think about it. As I get into the nitty gritty of making the film I’m feeling that [pressure] less and less. I suppose there are two kinds of expectations for the film, some want it to be as good as ‘Adam & Paul’ and there are some who want it to fall on its face."

Producer Ed Guiney is confident he has found yet another hit with ‘Garage’. The ‘Omagh’ and ‘Pure Mule’ producer exec-produced ‘Adam & Paul’ and was attracted to the idea of working with Abrahamson and O’Halloran again: “I got involved with the project in Berlin, just two years ago”, he commented to IFTN. “We want to build on the success of ‘Adam & Paul’. The script is excellent and ‘Garage’ is a tragic comedy in the true meaning of that expression.”

Abrahamson agrees: “I feel very strongly about it, and it’s a great script. It’s something nobody has seen before on Irish film and it takes the ideas and style behind ‘Adam & Paul’ to a new level. I’m confident about it and I think it will have an impact, regardless.”

Ed Guiney is joined by Andrew Lowe as executive producer with funding from the Irish Film Board, Film Four, RTE, the BCI and Section 481. A distribution deal is not yet finalised but the project has registered interest from leading UK distributors.

Production begins on 14th August 2006.
