Cillian Murphy
Principal photography began on Small Things Like These in Wicklow early last week. Cast and crew arrived in New Ross, County Wexford on Sunday for four weeks of filming.

Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders, Breakfast on Pluto) will star in an upcoming screen adaptation of Small Things Like These by Irish author Claire Keegan. Actors Emily Watson (God’s Creatures) and Ciarán Hinds (Kin, Belfast) will star alongside Murphy. Keegan’s work includes Foster, which was adapted for the screen as the Oscar-nominated and IFTA-winning An Cailín Ciúin by Colm Bairéad. The Small Things Like These screenplay was adapted by Enda Walsh, long-time collaborator of Cillian Murphy on theatrical productions such as the stage adaptation of Grief Is The Things With Feathers

Set in an Irish town in 1985, the film follows coal and timber merchant Bill Furlong (Murphy) in the lead up to Christmas, as he struggles with his conscience and the fear of standing up to church powers upon discovering the local convent’s treatment of unmarried mothers and their babies.

Small Things Like These was greenlit by Artists Equity, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s studio, whose first film Air recently debuted at SXSW 2023. The film is supported by Screen Ireland and Wilder Films in Belgium. Artists Equity’s Damon and Drew Vinton will produce, with Affleck, Kevin Halloran and Michael Joe executive producing. Jeff Robinov (Studio 8) will also produce.

Speaking to Deadline, Cillian Murphy said: “I’m honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Claire Keegan’s magnificent novel to the screen. We have gathered together a phenomenal team of creatives to make this film, and found exceptional partners in AE, a studio led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck — actors and filmmakers I have admired for many years.”

Quay Street, O’Hanrahan Bridge, Conduit Lane, and Michael Street will feature as shooting locations, with other locations under consideration.
“As with any film production, exact details are kept under wraps and confidential until the time of the film’s release,” said area manager Alan Fitzhenry speaking to New Ross Standard.

It's estimated that a cast and crew of 80 people will be living in New Ross for five to six weeks, and will be based in St Joseph’s school on Michael Street and the Old Fire Station on Davitt Road.
