Cork-made feature film Shem The Penman Sings Again to screen as part of the 60th Annual Cork Film Festival, Jon S. Baird and Damien O’Donnell confirmed for Foyle Film Festival conference and DAFF 2015 Winner presented with Trophy at IADT.

‘Shem The Penman Sings Again’ to screen at Cork’s Everyman Theatre

Padraig Trehy’s début feature film, ‘Shem The Penman Sings Again’, will have a special screening on November 13th in The Everyman Theatre as part of this year’s Cork Film Festival. As it celebrates its 60th anniversary, the Cork Film Festival is placing particular importance on Cork filmmakers and ‘Shem The Penman Sings Again’ was made from start to finish in the Rebel County.

Cork company Pooleen Productions produced the feature, and actors Frank Prendergast and Louis Lovett lead the talent on screen. Shem is also the first feature film to be projected in The Everyman since it ceased to be a cinema in the late 1980s. In addition to this, a lot of the film was actually shot in the theatre.

Director Pádraig Trehy stated: “It was a dream come true for me to shoot a feature film in Cork - our main locations of Fota House and The Everyman Palace were made affordable and accessible by enthusiastic staff and management. The talent in the region is clearly evident on screen throughout the cast, and we had the unswerving support of a highly professional and talented local crew which ultimately enabled us to complete this ambitious project in Cork.”

Having piqued the interest of important distributors such as Film Sales Corp from New York at its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh in July, Shem will be released next year to coincide with the 75th anniversary of James Joyce’s death as the film is inspired by one of Joyce’s most difficult works, ‘Finnegans Wake’.

Shem creates a fictional archive of the famous friendship of writer James Joyce and tenor John McCormack. The film connects the actual friendship of Joyce and McCormack with the relationship between Shem the Penman and Shaun the Post in Finnegans Wake through a combination of archive recordings and imaginary radio broadcasts. The merging of fantasy and reality is a key theme in the film, with clever interplay between Joyce’s real life and that of his alter ego, Shem the Penman.

Tickets for this special screening can be purchased at www.corkfilmfest.org and you can find out more about Shem at shemthepenman.com. ‘Shem the Penman Sings Again’ was funded by the Irish Film Board.

Film Industry Luminaries Confirmed For Foyle Film Festival Conference

Foyle Film Festival will welcome acclaimed directors Jon S. Baird (Filth) and Damien O’Donnell (East is East) to Derry~Londonderry on Friday 20 November as part of its ‘From Shorts to Features’ industry conference.

The award-winning filmmakers will be interviewed about their recent work, career to date, and their successful transition from shorts to feature films. The free one-day conference will be held in the Nerve Centre.

Baird’s first short film, ‘It’s A Casual Life’, led him landing a role as associate producer on the feature film, ‘Green Street’ (2005), starring Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam. His directorial debut feature, which he also wrote and produced, was the highly acclaimed ‘Cass’ (2008). His second feature ‘Filth’ (2013), based on the best-selling novel by Irvine Welsh and starred James McAvoy, won numerous awards and played at several international film festivals. ‘Filth’ is now in the top ten highest grossing UK 18 certificates of all time.

He has recently just returned from New York where he directed an episode of the Martin Scorsese produced HBO show ‘Vinyl’, and next year will direct ‘Stan and Ollie’; a feature film about the comedy legends Laurel and Hardy, for BBC Films and The Weinstein Company.

O’Donnell will also take part in a Q&A about his full-circle career in shorts and features. His highly acclaimed short film ‘Thirty Five Aside’, won more than 30 awards worldwide. Five years later in 2000, his first feature film, ‘East is East’ won the Prix Media at Cannes and a BAFTA for Best British Film in 2000. He also won the Empire Award for Best Newcomer in the same year and received a British Independent Film Awards nomination.

He has just completed a new short film, ‘How Was Your Day?’ which will screen as part of the Festival’s Oscar affiliated Light in Motion Awards competition.

In the afternoon a panel will explore how filmmakers can use digital media to bring their work to a global online audience. Panellists include Debs Paterson, director and writer, known for ‘Supraman’ and the ‘School of Necessity’ (2008), ‘We Are All Rwandans’ (2008) and ‘Africa United’ (2010) and Martin Gooch, who has directed more than 20 short films and his second feature film ‘The Search for Simon’ in 2012 premiered at the BFI Sci-Fi London Film Festival, winning several awards.

Throughout the day there will be opportunities for filmmakers to make contacts and network with their peers.

In the evening conference attendees will have the opportunity to attend, either a special screening of Blood Rising, a documentary detailing artist Brian Maguire’s portraiture and activism in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, or a panel discussion with screenwriting duo Glenn Patterson and Colin Carberry (Good Vibrations) and producer Mark McCauley on the adaptation process of turning a novel into a screenplay.

The Foyle Film Festival is the only Oscar affiliated festival in Northern Ireland and, in addition to the conference, will offer an exciting programme of in-competition documentaries, short films and animations from across the world. The 2015 winners will be announced on the Closing Night at Brunswick Moviebowl.

Foyle Film Festival is a flagship project of the Nerve Centre, funded by DCAL through Northern Ireland Screen and by Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Registration for Foyle Film Festival’s free CONF15 ‘From Shorts to Features’, is now open. Visit www.foylefilmfestival.org for further information on the conference and to download the full Festival programme, which will run from November 18 – 22.

DAFF 2015 Winner presented with Trophy at IADT

After a successful two day celebration of animation on the 16 and 17 October in Dún Laoghaire, Dublin Animation Film Festival held one more event, before the festival for 2015 was ‘officially closed.’

Bibi Queisen, the winner of the Under 18s category, who lives in the Netherlands, was unable to attend the DAFF2015 Awards ceremony at the Pavilion Theatre, due to her upcoming exams.

A special presentation and photocall was organised for her at IADT (Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology) on the 29th October. Bibi was also given a tour of the National Film School and introduced to the students by Keith Foran, Co-Ordinator of the IADT animation programme.

Bibi was delighted with her visit to Dublin and her win at DAFF2015: ‘This was the first Animation Film Festival that I entered. I was thrilled that my film ‘Remember to Smile’ won the Under 18s award and I was so disappointed that I couldn’t attend the festival. But I had to study for my exams. Once they were over, my mother and I decided to make the trip to Dublin. I was delighted to visit IADT and I want to thank Dr. Annie Doona, the President of IADT, Fionnghuala Ní Néill and Sharon Kavanagh Banks for organising the presentation for me.’

Dr. Annie Doona commented: ‘It was a pleasure to welcome Bibi to IADT. She is a very talented student and I hope that she will continue to make animated films. We were delighted to present her trophy to her and we hope that she will come back to Dublin to study in the future.’

Other DAFF 2015 winners include ‘Guida’ directed by Rosana Urbes (Brazil) for Best International Short, ‘An Ode to Love’, directed by Matthew Darragh (Brown Bag Films) for Best Irish Short while a Special Recognition Award went to Tomm Moore, co-creator of Oscar nominated animation studio Cartoon Saloon (‘The Secret of Kells’, ‘Song of the Sea’).
