The Irish at the 50th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival
01 Jul 2015 : Seán Brosnan
Actor Jamie Dornan and director Mark Cousins will be guests at the world-renowned festival this year
The 50th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival kicks off on July 3, with the Irish once again fielding a strong contingent at the world-renowned festival which takes place in the Czech Republic.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is one of the oldest film festivals in the world and this year features Irish film ‘The Lobster’, Northern Irish film ‘I Am Belfast’ and IFTA-nominated short film ‘Skunky Dog’. Director Mark Cousins, actor Jamie Dornan and IFTA CEO Áine Moriarty will also be in attendance at the festival.

Documentary ‘I Am Belfast’, directed by Mark Cousins and produced by Canderblinks Film & Music and Hopscotch Films, is set to screen at the festival in competition. Shot by Christopher Doyle, scored by David Holmes and produced by John Archer and Chris Martin , ‘I Am Belfast’ is a unique look at the city and portrays Belfast as a free spirited woman and a walking tour guide. ‘I Am Belfast’ premiered at the Belfast Film Festival earlier this year to positive reviews.

Director Mark Cousins will also be part of a section of the festival entitled ‘Six Close Encounters’ in which six directors who share a history with the festival will present one of their favourite films. He will present Iranian film ‘A Moment of Innocence’, directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, who will receive the Galway Hooker Award at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh (July 7 – 12).

Also screening in competition is Yorgos Lanthimos’s critically acclaimed Cannes hit ‘The Lobster’. A surreal, romantic drama and winner of the Jury Prize at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, ‘The Lobster’ stars Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz with a supporting cast including Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, John C.Reilly, Olivia Colman and Ashley Jensen.

Shot at Parknasilla in Co. Kerry in Spring 2014, ‘The Lobster’ is co-produced by Element Pictures who will distribute the film when it is released to Irish cinemas on October 16.

James Fitzgerald’s IFTA-nominated short film ‘Skunky Dog’ will also be showing at Karlovy Vary. ‘Skunky Dog’ tells the story of a young alcoholic boy in a rural fishing town, who is confronted by the truth that he might never break his routine or leave the town. The film has so far won awards at the Clones Film Festival and the Underground Cinema Festival as well as winning at the Royal Student Television Society Awards in London on June 5th.

Written and directed by James Fitzgerald, the film was made as part of his graduation project while studying at IADT. 'Skunky Dog' is produced by Paddy Slattery and stars Ryan McParland, Lacy Moore, David McSavage and John Connors.

Screening at the festival is ‘Slow West’, produced by and starring Michael Fassbender and shot by Robbie Ryan, which is currently showing in Irish cinemas.

Also of Irish interest, Áine Moriarty, the Chief Executive of the Irish Film & Television Academy, will be attending the annual meeting of the Film Academies Network of Europe (FAN-E), which is held each year at the Karlovy Vary festival.

Jamie Dornan will take time out of shooting Richie Smith’s ‘Jadotville’ to appear at the festival to promote his upcoming film ‘Anthropoid’ which begins filming in Czech Republic next month. ‘Anthropoid’ deals with the dramatic events around the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich - Dornan will play the role of one of the paratroopers, Jan Kubiš with Irish actor Cillian Murphy also attached to star.

The 50th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will take place from July 3-11 2015. For more information on the festival, check out their website: www.kviff.com.
