#IFTNfestival: Polish/Irish Co-Production ‘I Never Cry’ Selected for Prestigious ‘Goes to Cannes’ Film Market

Principal production on the co-production wrapped in Ireland back in March and is produced by Jan Kwiecinski of Polish production company Akson Studios alongside Irish producer Julie Ryan of MK1 Productions (‘The Young Offenders’).

I Never Cry’ has been chosen for the prestigious Goes to Cannes film market, Marché du Film, which runs during the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival.

The Goes to Cannes programme invites the largest festivals to present selected films to the international film industry, films that are in post-production and do not yet have agents, distributors or set premiere dates. Inserts from the film will be presented at the festival.

Due to the collaboration between the Polish Film Institute and the New Horizons Association, the New Horizons International Film Festival is one of the 6 international film festivals to present selected films.

Speaking about his experience of making the film in Ireland and Poland, director Piotr Domalewski told IFTN:
"Making I Never Cry was such a great experience. That was my first international coproduction and I'm really happy that I had the opportunity to work with Irish filmmakers. The subject of the film is directly connected to our countries, and it was a pleasure to be on the same emotional side with our co-producer and the crew. Shooting I never cry was also a challenge on the technical reason, because we had to find the most efficient way to work together, and we did it. Step by step we started to learn from each other. We started to function as one organism. Shooting in Ireland gave me a unique possibility to get closer to the world in which my story is established. I hope to come back to Dublin with other projects in the future."

Speaking about the selection of ‘I Never Cry’ for the Marché du Film, Domalewski added, "Presenting my project at the legendary festival in Cannes is something I could never imagine.  I don't have the proper words to express my excitement. Last year I participated in the festival thanks to ScriptEast program and felt the atmosphere and celebration of international cinematography in Cannes Festival. I dreamt about coming back with this project. Luckily the future is now and my dreams are coming true."

Speaking about the experience, Irish producer Julie Ryan told IFTN:

"It was a pleasure to welcome Piotr and Jan to Ireland on this co-production and a great opportunity for the Irish cast and crew to work together with our Polish counterparts. It's an important story to tell and we were able to be a part of it."

‘I Never Cry’ revolves around 17-year-old Ola, who goes to Ireland to bring back the body of her recently deceased father who was working in Ireland to support his family in Poland.  Ola also has another objective in mind – she plans to retrieve the money that her dad had promised her so that she could buy a car. While dealing with the foreign bureaucracy, the young woman comes to realise that she is, in fact, more interested in getting to know who her father really was than anything else.

Distributor negotiations are underway with world sales still available. The film is supported by Polish Film Institute, Screen Ireland, Eurimages, Mazovia Warsaw Film Fund, and Warmia-Masuria Film Fund.

Inserts of I Never Cry will screen at the New Horizons' Polish Days Goes to Cannes screening, which will be held on May 19 at 10 AM - 12 noon at Palais K- level 4 in the Festival Palace during the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival. Entrance for market badge holders.
