Andrew Scott in John Butlers recent cinema release Handsome Devil
The BBC this week announced the launch of Gay Britannia, a season of programming marking the 50th anniversary of The Sexual Offences Act 1967. Dublin actor Andrew Scott familiar to fans of mystery drama ‘Sherlock’ is one of the Irish names noted to feature within the line up of new content and programmes scheduled.

Although details of his casting role within the programming for the Gay Britannia season are yet to be disclosed.  Andrew can currently be caught in Irish cinemas starring in John Butlers second film project Handsome Devil which was officially released in cinemas on April 21st.

Starring alongside other Irish talent in the film such as Moe Dunford (Vikings) Amy Huberman (Striking Out), Ardal O'Hanlon (Death In Paradise) and Fionn O'Shea (Siege of Jadotville), Handsome Devil  follows the story of the unlikely friendship of boarding school roommates Ned (O'Shea) and Conor (Nicholas Galitzine).

In the film, Andrew Scott plays the role of English secondary school teacher Dan Sherry, a gay character within the storyline who helps to develop and encourage his students to find their own voices and defy the status quo of their rugby-obsessed school.

Featuring across the Gay Britannia season of programming is an expectation of bold and provocative stories that celebrate the LGBTQ community as well as challenging existing preconceptions and prejudices.

Actress Vanessa Redgrave who recently starred as Lady Rose in Jim Sheridan’s The Secret Scripture alongside Rooney Mara (Lion) and Irish Actors Jack Raynor (Sing Street) and Aidan Turner (Poldark)is to also feature in the Gay Britannia programming. Vanessa is cast in the drama Man In An Orange Shirt which will be the first screen drama from novelist Patrick Gale.

Speaking about the programming launch of Gay Britannia, Patrick Holland, Channel Controller BBC Two, says: “This is a rich and compelling set of programmes that challenge us all. From the heart-breaking testimony of the men who lived through the years before partial decriminalisation in Against The Law and Patrick Gale’s intensely personal Man In An Orange Shirt, to a documentary revealing the experience of people facing discrimination in the UK today, this season is a powerful examination of how far we have come - whilst also exploring how much further we have to travel.”

Content will be available on both BBC radio, TV, online and digital platforms with the season casting a fresh light on the history of gay Britain.
