Belfast's Sixteen South Win Children’s BAFTA for Independent Production Company of the Year
23 Nov 2016 : Laura Brennan
Northern Ireland's Sixteen South, has won the Independent Production Company of the Year category at this year’s British Academy Children’s Awards.

The British Academy Children’s Awards honour the very best in children’s media and were held at the Roundhouse in London on Sunday, 20th November.

Colin Williams, Creative Director of Sixteen South said: “I am stunned and over the moon to win this incredibly special award.  To win a BAFTA is brilliant – but to win this, the mother-of-all-BAFTAs is just phenomenal for us because it recognises the combined output of all our shows in production and in development.  We were nominated alongside three wonderful studios and genuinely didn’t expect to win.  This means so much – it is a huge accolade for everyone in SixteenSouth but also an important statement about the quality of work coming from Northern Ireland right now.”

The Belfast based animation company recently opened a new £1m studio and employs over 100 people. Sixteen South is best known for ‘Lilly’s Driftwood Bay’ which is set on the fictional, rugged Island of Arranish and is about a little girl who creates an imaginary world from treasures she finds washed up on the beach. The show is the first international series of its kind to be created and produced completely in Northern Ireland. It has been sold to over 100 countries and airs locally on Nick Jr, Milkshake, RTÉ2, RTÉjr and Netflix.

The Children's BAFTA success follows on from Lily’s Driftwood Bay winning the 'Children's and/or Animation' category at last week's Royal Television Society Awards for Northern Ireland, which were held in The MAC, Belfast on Thursday, 17th November.

‘Lilly’s Driftwood Bay’ received funding from Northern Ireland Screen supported by Invest NI. Sixteen South is also currently working on new production ‘Claude’, an adaptation of the best-selling book series by Alex T. Smith which has been picked up by Disney Junior and is due to air in 50 eleven minute installments next year.

Richard Williams, CEO Northern Ireland Screen, said “We are delighted for Sixteen South on winning the Independent Production Company of the Year award. It is a fabulous achievement and speaks volumes for the growth, success and future potential of the kids and animation sectors in Northern Ireland. The sector just keeps going from strength to strength with Sixteen South leading the way.”

Colin said:  “I am indebted to the commitment of the incredible team that I have around me who share my ideals to make shows with passion, heart and quality.  We are also indebted to the support of Northern Ireland Screen who have backed us from day one and who continue to believe in us.”
