13 Oct 2021 : Nathan Griffin
Minister Catherine Martin
Several positive allocations of funding for the Irish Screen industry within Budget 2022 have been revealed by the Minister for the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD.

Among these is the news that Screen Ireland will received an increase of 22% in our 2022 budget, with an allocation of €36.74 million comprising €32.15m capital funding and €4.59m current funding.

The Irish screen body issued a statement on social media saying: “We would like to sincerely thank Minister Catherine Martin for her ongoing support and commitment to the creative screen industry, which has significantly contributed to the recovery of the sector.”

“The additional funding today recognises the outstanding resilience of the industry, its international success and significant potential for future growth,” the statement continued. “This funding will enable Screen Ireland to build, in partnership with the sector, a sustainable future for Irish creatives and production crew across feature film, TV drama, animation and documentary.”

The Department also revealed that €5.5m will be allocated to the creation of the new Media Commission, which will take over from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

Another exciting development is that €25 m has been allocated for a basic income scheme for artists, as well as an increase in funding of €4.2m to the national Irish language broadcaster TG4.

Minister Martin described these as a number of “top line” figures, as a briefing outlining the full details of the budget allocation for the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media will take place later today.
