Screen Wexford Directors Masterclass with Emmy award-winning Director Dearbhla Walsh

A Directors Master Class with Emmy and IFTA Award Winning Director Dearbhla Walsh will be the first of a series of Master Classes given by leading Film and Television experts as part of Screen Wexford’s new training initiative in partnership with The Arts & Economic Department of Wexford County Council, Creative Ireland, Bodecii Film, and The Screen Directors Guild of Ireland.

Screen Wexford is calling for emerging Wexford-based Directors to apply for the weekend workshop by the 17th of November. This Weekend Workshop takes place online on the 28th and 29th of November and places are limited to ten participants. The workshop aims to strengthen participants’ drama directing skills, as well as, getting an insight into Walsh’s approach to directing, participants will also work in small groups to direct scenes with actors.

Dearbhla Walsh is an award-winning director who has worked on drama series including most recently Tales from the Loop, The Handmaid’s Tale, EastEnders, Shameless, Penny Dreadful, The Tudors, and much to her nephew’s delight the Netflix Marvel series The Punisher. Hailing from Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo, she won the 2009 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie, or Dramatic Special for Little Dorrit. She directed Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot starring Dustin Hoffman and Judi Dench; a television film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel of the same name.

Walsh has also directed several art/dance films, funded by the Arts Council, in collaboration with Fearghus Ó Conchúir including Match and I’m Roger Casement. Walsh has been nominated for the Irish Film and Television Awards nine times and won three times for directing in 2011, 2018 and 2020 respectively.

Screen Wexford is an initiative of Wexford County Council's Arts and Economic Development departments, the aim of which is to support the development of the ever-growing Film and AV sector. As part of this support, a variety of Screen Training and Masterclass programmes  are being delivered in 2020-2021 in partnership with key local and national stakeholders such as Wexford Local Enterprise Office, Screen Skills Ireland, Bodecii Film, The Screen Directors Guild, Visit Wexford, and supported through Creative Ireland. 

Screen Wexford is committed to providing training, funding opportunities, and mentorships for new and emerging filmmakers, as well as, growing a diverse regional pool of creative talent and crew. The aim is to provide opportunities within the industry for those who at present may feel precluded from a career within the sector and to nurture a diverse range of talent from all backgrounds and an inclusive and evolving screen industries workforce.
