Principal photography is underway in Cork on Series 2 of RTÉ and BBC Three comedy TV show ‘The Young Offenders’.

Created by Peter Foott, the show is produced by Vico Films for BBC Three, in association with RTÉ. Martina Niland (‘Once’, ‘Sing Street’) and Tim Whitby (‘Gap Year’, ‘Shameless’) feature as producers on the second season, which follows on from hugely successful debut season last year and the 2016 box office hit feature film.

The second series of ‘The Young Offenders’ will see the return of all of the shows key characters including Conor and Jock (Alex Murphy and Chris Walley); Mairéad (Hilary Rose); Principal Walsh and his wife Orla along with their two daughters Linda and Siobhán (PJ Gallagher, Orla Fitzgerald, Demi Isaac Oviawe and Jennifer Barry); Sergeant Healy (Dominic McHale) and of course Billy Murphy (Shane Casey).

Walley recently won the award for Best Supporting Actor at the Olivier Awards in London. The accolade comes off the back of his acclaimed performance in Martin McDonagh’s ‘The Lieutenant of Inishmore’, which feature at the West End in 2018.

Last year’s season finale proved a major hit with 366,000 tuning into RTÉ2 to see local loose cannon Billy Murphy hijack a bus, culminating in a Frank and Walters sing-along with his captive audience. ‘The Young Offenders’ maintained an average (consolidated) audience of 401,000 during its first season on RTÉ, and proved hugely popular with younger viewers: 36% of 15-34 year olds tuned in to the show every Thursday night on RTÉ2.

The show was quickly renewed for a second series by BBC Three.

Speaking about the strong support from BBC Three, creator Peter Foott said:

"The response already to the show has been phenomenal, myself and the whole team have been blown away by it. To have BBC Three commission a second series so quickly is a dream come true, their support for the project has been unwavering from the start.

"This level of commitment is incredibly reassuring, and we're keen to continue telling stories involving these characters. We're very grateful to the BBC for allowing us to do so."

Series 2 will be broadcast later in 2019.
