‘An Díog Is Faide”/The Longest Ditch’ will be screened on 20 screens across Ireland from the 1st of October 2004. The film, written and directed by Hugh Farley, was shot with the assistance of over 200 extras who helped re-create the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics.
The film is based on the true story of Sonnie Murphy the Co Clare athlete who competed for Ireland in the 1932 Olympics that took place in the LA Coliseum. Sonnie took place in the steeplechase event, along with Bob Tisdall and Dr Pat O’Callaghan who both won gold medals for Ireland that year. A race is still held annually in Kilnaboy Co Clare every year, to celebrate Sonnie’s spirit.
It was commissioned by the EBU as part of a series of eight films to celebrate this year’s Olympics – this is Ireland’s film. Shot on locations in Clare, Limerick and Santry Stadium in Dublin in February of this year with financing from TG4, the Irish Film Board and Foras Na Gaeilge as part of the Oscailt series.
The film stars Stephen Darcy, Peardar Lamb, Catriona Ní Murchu, Enda Oates Aongus Óg McAnally, Lochlain O’Mearain, and Sean T O’Meallaigh. The film also stars a number of professional athletes, children from the Spotlight Stage School Limerick, as well as wonderful extras from Co. Clare and from Movie Extras in Dublin.
