The nominations for the 2021 BAFTA Television Awards have been announced with Element Pictures’ BBC Three hit series Normal People picking up seven nominations.
The Sally Rooney-adaptation earned a nomination for Best Mini-Series, while leading actors Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones were nominated in the Lead Actor and Lead Actress categories.
Oscar-nominated Irish director Lenny Abrahamson was also nominated for Best Director - Fiction for his work on the 12-part series.
Normal People also saw three craft nomination for Irish crew including Susie Lavelle; Best Photography and Lighting, Nathan Nugent; Best Editing - Fiction, and Niall O'Sullivan, Steve Fanagan, and Niall Brady; Best Sound - Fiction.
Sir Steve McQueen’s anthology series Small Axe leads the way with 15 nominations overall.
Three of these are across the Lead Actor and Actress categories: John Boyega (Star Wars) being recognised for his performance in Red, White, and Blue (episode 3), while Black Panther star Letitia Wright and Shaun Parkes are both nonmined for their performances in Mangrove (episode 1).
The BBC series, which is nominated for nine craft awards, is also nominated for Best Mini-Series, Best Director for McQueen’s work on Mangrove, and two supporting actor nods for Michael Ward and Malachi Kirby.
Netflix’s royal drama, The Crown, received 10 nominations - six craft categories and four TV categories including Best Drama. The other three nods recognised actors Josh O’Connor (Prince Charles), Tobias Menzies (Prince Philip), and Helena Bonham Carter (Princess Margaret), for their portrayal of key members of the royal family.
Richard Ayoade will return the Virgin Media BAFTA TV Awards, which take place on Sunday, June 6th.
The Television Craft Awards will take place at an earlier date of Monday, May 24th.
