Alisha Weir
Alisha Weir (11) has been cast in the titular role in the Sony Pictures and Netflix movie adaptation of Roald Dahl’s popular children’s book Matilda, opposite Emma Thomson.

Based on the hit award-winning musical and the beloved novel by Roald Dahl, Matilda tells the story of an intelligent little girl who is stuck with her nasty parents and her sadist school headmistress. With her kind teacher, revolting classmates, and her huge imagination, she tries to change her destiny. Matilda was previously adapted for the screen in 1996 and starred Mara Wilson, Danny DeVito, Pam Ferris, and Embeth Davidtz.

Weir, who appeared in Mark O’Connor’s Darklands in 2019, is signed to Maureen Ward’s Talent Academy and among her other roles has played Molly in the musical Annie at the Dublin National Concert Hall and appeared in Once at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin.

Weir previously appeared on the Late Late Toy Show audience in 2017 when she fronted a choir that sang a cover of Cindy Lauper’s True Colours, and appeared on the Late Late Show again last year to take part in Irish Women in Harmony’s performance, a cover of The Cranberries’ Dreams also featuring Una Healy and Imelda May among others in aid of the ISPCC.

Other key cast confirmed at this point is Oscar-winner Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility; Howard’s End) who will play the iconic Miss Trunchbull, and Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel; No Time to Die) as Miss Honey, the sweet teacher who encourages Matilda.

Matthew Warchus, who directed the original Tony Award-winning stage musical, is also directing the movie. The script comes from Dennis Kelly, and the original music and lyrics by comedian Tim Minchin will also be featured.

"Matilda will be an imaginative and fresh retelling of the award-winning musical, Matilda, featuring talented young newcomers, alongside established stars," Warchus said in a statement. "I look forward to introducing this beloved and powerful story to a new generation of fans around the world.”

Matilda is currently in pre-production, with production details and a release date yet to be announced.
