Screen Daily has revealed that George Mackay (1917) and Lily-Rose Depp will lead the cast of writer-director Nathalie Biancheriís feature film Wolf, which is scheduled to shoot in Ireland this April.

Wolf marks the debut feature film for Irish production company Feline Films, with co-founder Jessie Fisk (Song of Granite) producing alongside Biancheri (Nocturnal).

“The inspiration comes from a real condition, species dysphoria, in which people believe they are an animal trapped in a human body,” the filmmaker explained when speaking with Screen.

“I wanted to depart from reality and take the film into an increasingly disturbing and violent microcosm where I could explore the meaning of the pressure to conform and how far we’ve departed from our basic instincts. The world of the film is colourful and perpetually ambiguous. Ultimately however it is Jacob’s story and in the simplest form, a quest for personal freedom.”

The arthouse drama follows a boy, Jacob (Mackay), who believes he is a wolf trapped in a human body. As the boy seeks help for his illness in a clinic that specialises in the disorder, he realises he is not alone in suffering from his perceived unique condition. However, unlike his teenage peers who progressively renounce their animal selves Jacob feels liberated in his animalistic state of mind, creating a deep residing conflict of true self versus the pressure to conform to societal rules.

”Wolf was the starting point for Feline Films, we had this daring and truly special idea which was the very root of the material we wanted the company to produce,” said Jessie Fisk of Feline FIlms.

Bankside Films is handling the international sales rights for the film and plans to introduce it to buyers at the European Film Market next week.

Wolf is one of the most striking and original stories we have seen,” said Bankside’s Stephen Kelliher told Screen. “It tackles important and timely themes including identity and self-determination with a vision that is unique yet highly relatable. Nathalie has created a wonderfully heightened world inhabited by the most compelling characters which will speak to audiences globally.”

The film is supported by Screen Ireland Eurimages and the Polish Film Institute with Jane Doolan and Celine Haddad featuring as executive producers for Screen Ireland.

The project was also one of eleven projects selected for last year’s Talent Project Market at Berlinale, which offers participating producers an introduction to the international market, access to selected financiers and valuable expertise to help make their films.

Biancheri’s debut feature film Nocturnal, which starred Sadie Frost (Love, Honor and Obey) and Cosmo Jarvis (Calm with Horses), premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in 2019.
