IFTN Talks With Fionn O’Shea
25 Apr 2018 : Nathan Griffin
IFTN caught up with Fionn O’Shea to find out about his up and coming projects, who he has been most impressed by in 2018, and who he would love to work with in Ireland.

Irish actor Fionn O’Shea is best known for his work in John Butler’s ‘Handsome Devil’ in which he played the films protagonist Ned Roche.  He also featured alongside Jamie Dornan & Jason O’Mara in Richie Smyth’s IFTA-winning action-drama ‘The Siege of Jadotville’, RTÉ TV series ‘Raw’ & ITV’s new drama ‘Innocent’.

O’Shea enjoyed a successful 2017 culminating in two nominations at the 2018 IFTA Film & Drama awards including one for ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role Film’ and the Irish Film Board Rising Star award at the IFTA Ceremony earler this year for his performance in John Butlers ‘Handsome Devil’ in 2017.

His up and coming projects include ‘The Aftermath’, Sam Johnson’s ‘Earthly Encounters’, and Channel 4’s upcoming comedy series ‘Hang Ups’.

IFTN: What are the best and worst aspects of your work?

Fionn: “One of the best aspects for me is the amount you learn on every job. Whether it's about acting, cameras, lighting, etc. you can never know enough and I find that really exciting. Another great thing is the people you get to meet. You spend such an intense, short amount of time together and leave feeling like you've known each other your whole life. A lot of my closest friends I originally met on set.”

“One of the worst aspects is probably finishing a job. It's always really difficult saying goodbye to everyone and going back to reality.”

IFTN: What career do you think you would have if you weren’t in film/tv industry?

Fionn: “I started a business degree when I finished school but dropped out in 1st Year after getting a part in 'The Siege of Jadotville'. So, if I wasn't acting I'd probably be doing something business related. It's probably better off that I'm not though because "something business related" shows how little I know about business..”

IFTN: What Irish Actor / Director would you most like to work with?

Fionn: “There are so many Irish people I’d love to work with, but if I had to name one director I’d say Lenny Abrahamson, and one actor would be Cillian Murphy. ‘What Richard Did’ is one of my favourite films, along with ‘Room’, so I’d jump at any opportunity to work with him. I think Cillian Murphy is incredible in everything I’ve seen him in, so in the same way, he’s someone I’m dying to work with.”

IFTN: What are you most excited about for 2018?

Fionn: “I have a film coming out called 'The Aftermath' directed by James Kent. It's set in Hamburg after WW2 and it stars Keira Knightley, Jason Clarke and Alexander Skarsgard. I also have a comedy series coming out later this year on Channel 4 called 'Hang Ups' starring Stephen Mangan and directed by Robert Delamere.”

IFTN: Who has really impressed you in the Irish industry in the last 12 months?

Fionn: “It’s hard to pick out one person but there have been so many young actors who’ve done great work this year. I saw Michael Inside recently and thought Dafhyd was brilliant in it. Barry Keoghan in TKOASD is amazing too.”

IFTN: Was there a particular scene you learnt by heart for auditions starting out?

Fionn: “I started acting when I was 11 so my experience was a little different. There wasn't one scene I'd have prepared, I'd just learn whatever scenes I was sent, print out a CV and try to remember to say "Thank You" to everyone otherwise my Mum would send me back into the room to do it.“

Fionn can next be seen on ITV’s new drama ‘Innocent’, which is set to broadcast in May.
